संकलन</strong></strong><br />शब्दों के संकलन और कोश निर्माण की बात करें तो—<br /><br /><br />सभ्यता और संस्कृति के उदय से ही आदमी जान गया था कि भाव के सही संप्रेषण के लिए सही अभिव्यक्ति आवश्यक है. सही अभिव्यक्ति के लिए सही शब्द का चयन आवश्यक है. सही शब्द के चयन के लिए शब्दों के संकलन आवश्यक हैं. शब्दों और भाषा के मानकीकरण की आवश्यकता समझ कर आरंभिक लिपियों के उदय से बहुत पहले ही आदमी ने शब्दों का लेखाजोखा रखना शुरू कर दिया था. इस के लिए उस ने कोश बनाना शुरू किया. कोश मेंबने. हमारी यह शानदार परंपरा वेदों जितनी—कम से कम पाँच हज़ार साल—पुरानी है. प्रजापति कश्यप का निघंटु संसार का प्राचीनतम शब्द संकलन है. इस में 18 सौ वैदिक शब्दों को इकट्ठा किया गया है. निघंटु पर महर्षि यास्क की व्याख्या निरुक्त संसार का पहला शब्दार्थ कोश और विश्वकोश यानी ऐनसाइक्लोपीडिया है! इस महान शृंखला की सशक्त कड़ी है छठी या सातवीं सदी में लिखा अमर सिंह कृत नामलिंगानुशासन या त्रिकांड जिसे सारा संसार अमर कोश के नाम से जानता है.<br /><br />भारत के बाहर संसार में शब्द संकलन का एक प्राचीन प्रयास अक्कादियाई संस्कृति की शब्द सूची है. यह शायद ईसा पूर्व सातवीं सदी की रचना है. ईसा से तीसरी सदी पहले की चीनी भाषा का कोश है ईर्या.<br /><br />आधुनिक कोशों की नीवँ डाली इंग्लैंड में 1755 में सैमुएल जानसन ने. उन की डिक्शनरी आफ़ इंग्लिश लैंग्वेज (Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language) ने कोशकारिता को नए आयाम दिए. इस में परिभाषाएँ भी दी गई थीं.<br /><br />असली आधुनिक कोश आया इक्यावन साल बाद 1806. अमरीका में नोहा वैब्स्टर की ए कंपैंडियस डिक्शनरी आफ़ इंग्लिश लैंग्वेज (Noah Webster's A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language) प्रकाशित हुई. इस ने जो स्तर स्थापित किया वह पहले कभी नहीं हुआ था. साहित्यिक शब्दावली के साथ साथ कला और विज्ञान क्षेत्रों को स्थान दिया गया था. कोश को सफल होना ही था, हुआ. वैब्स्टर के बाद अँगरेजी कोशों के रिवीज़न और नए कोशों के प्रकाशन का व्यवसाय तेज़ी से बढ़ने लगा. आज छोटे बड़े हर शहर में, विदेशों में तो हर गाँव में, किताबों की दुकानें हैं. हर दुकान पर कई कोश मिलते हैं. हर साल कोशों में नए शब्द शामिल किए जाते हैं.<br /><br />अपने कोशों के लिए वैब्स्टर ने 20 भाषाएँ सीखीं ताकि वह अँगरेजी शब्दों के उद्गम तक जा सकें. आप को जान कर आश्चर्य होगा और प्रसन्नता भी कि उन भाषाओं में एक संस्कृत भी थी. तभी उस कोश में अनेक अँगरेजी शब्दों का संस्कृत उद्गम तक वर्णित है. मैं पिछले तीस सालों से वैब्स्टर कोश का न्यू कालिजिएट संस्करण काम में ला रहा हूँ. मुझे इस में मेरे काम की हर ज़रूरी सामग्री मिल जाती है. यहाँ तक कि भारोपीय मूल वाले अँगरेजी शब्दों के संस्कृत स्रोत भी. समांतर कोश के द्विभाषी संस्करण द पेंगुइन इग्लिश-हिंदी/हिंदी-इंग्लिश थिसारस ऐंड डिक्शनरी पर काम करते करते कई बार तो अनपेक्षित जगहों पर भी शब्दों के संस्कृत मूल मिल गए. पता चला कि ईक्विवैलेंट, बाईवैलेंट जैसे शब्दों के मूल में है संस्कृत का वलयन. एअर यानी हवा का मूल संस्कृत ईर में है, सोनिक के मूल में हैं संस्कृत के स्वन और स्वानिक. कई बार मैं सोचता था—काश, डाक्टर रघुवीर की टीम ने और बाद में तकनीकी शब्दावली बनाने वाले सरकारी संस्थानों ने ये संस्कृत मूल जानने की कोशिश की होती! उन के बनाए शब्दों को एक भारतीय आधार मिल जाता और लोकप्रियता सहज हो जाती. ख़ैर, उन लोगों ने जो किया वह भी भागीरथ प्रयास था...<br /><br />कोश कई तरह के होते हैं. किसी भाषा के एकल कोश, जैसे ऊपर लिखे अँगरेजी कोश या हिंदी से हिंदी के कोश. इन में एक भाषा के शब्दों के अर्थ उसी भाषा में समझाए जाते हैं. कोश द्विभाषी भी होते हैं. जैसे संस्कृत से अँगरेजी के कोश. सन 1872 में छपी सर मोनिअर मोनिअर-विलियम्स की (बारीक़ टाइप में 8.5"x11.75" आकार के तीन कालम वाले एक हज़ार तीन सौ तैंतीस पृष्ठों की अद्वितीय संस्कृत-इंग्लिश डिक्शनरी इस का अनुपम उदाहरण है. या आजकल बाज़ार में मिलने वाले ढेर सारे अँगेरेजी-हिंदी कोश और हिंदी-अँगरेजी कोश. इन का उद्देश्य होता है एक भाषा जानने वाले को दूसरी भाषा के शब्दों का ज्ञान देना. जिस को जिस भाषा में पारंगत होना होता है या उस के शब्दों को समझने की ज़रूरत होती है, वह उसी भाषा के कोशों का उपयोग करता है.<br /><br /><br /><strong> कोशों के पीछे सामाजिक और राजनीतिक उद्देश्य भी होते हैं. </strong><br /><br />मोनिअर-विलियम्स के ज़माने में अँगरेज भारत पर राज करने के लिए हमारी संस्कृति और भाषाओं को पूरी तरह समझना चाहते थे, इस लिए उन्हों ने ऐसे कई कोश बनवाए. आज हम अँगरेजी सीख कर सारे संसार का ज्ञान पाना चाहते हैं तो हम अँगरेजी से हिंदी के कोश बना रहे हैं. हमारे समांतर कोश और उस के बाद के हमारे ही अन्य कोश भी हमारे दैश की इसी इच्छा आकांक्षा के प्रतीक हैं, प्रयास हैं.<br /><br />(क्रमशः)Arvind Kumar's लिपि में यूरोप की अधिकांश भाषाएँ लिखी जाती हैं. रोमन में हिंदी भी लिखी जाती है. ब्रिटिश काल में सैनिकों को रोमन हिंदी सिखाई जाती थी. आज इंटरनैट पर कई लोग हिंदी पत्रव्यवहार रोमन लिपि में ही करते हैं. style="font-size: 11pt;" lang="EN-GB">, </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Mangal; font-weight: normal;" lang="HI">दसियों साल विदेशों में रह कर भी किसी भी प्रकार के अहंकार से हीन पूरी तरह भारतीय और आम आदमी के हितों के समर्थक रहे. उन के जैसे पढ़ाकू मैं ने कम देखे हैं. गार्गी गुप्ता विदुषी थीं</span><span style="font-size: 11pt;" lang="EN-GB">, </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; lang="HI">रहना ओढ़ना बिछोना अनुवाद ही था. उन की देखरेख में भारतीय अनुवाद परिषद संसार की प्रमुख संस्थाओं में बनी. मेरे लिए यह हर्ष की बात है कि गार्गी और सुलेख के जाने के बाद परिषद को उन की उत्साही पुत्रवधु नीता गुप्ता का पूरा समर्थन मिल रहा है. डाक्टर पूरणचंद टंडन और श्रीमती संतोष वर्मा कई वर्षों से इस की बाग़डोर सँभाले हैं.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="Uninormal"><span style="font-size: दूसरे देश और एक से दूसरी पीढ़ी तक आसानी से जा सकता था. मुद्रण कला के आविष्कार से मानव के ज्ञान में विस्तार के महाद्वार खुल गए. और अब इंटरनैट सूचना का महापथ और ज्ञान विज्ञान का अप्रतिम भंडार बन गया है. कई काव्य ग्रंथ उर्दू लिपि में लिखे गए. आज उर्दू कविताएँ देवनागरी में छपती और ख़ूब बिकती हैं. रोमन लिपि में यूरोप की अधिकांश भाषाएँ लिखी जाती हैं. रोमन में हिंदी भी लिखी जाती है. ब्रिटिश काल में सैनिकों को रोमन हिंदी सिखाई जाती थी. आज इंटरनैट पर कई लोग हिंदी पत्रव्यवहार रोमन लिपि में ही करते हैं. रोमन में आजकल संसार की कई अन्य भाषाएँ लिखने के कई विकल्प मिलते हैं...<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p पर मैं पब्लिश करूँगा.<br /><br /><span style="color:#cc0000;">हिंदी का उच्चारण पिछले दशकों में, कहें तो पिछली सदी में, तेजी से बदला है. वह संस्कृत के प्रभाव से भिन्न होता जा रहा है.</span> संस्कृत में ए ऐ ओ औ संयुक्त ध्वनियाँ थीं। वहाँ दो स्वतंत्र स्वरों को लिखने कि आज़ादी नहीं थी। अ और इ हों तो ए ही लिखना होता था, अ और ई हों तो ऐ। अब हम लोग ए और ऐ को स्वतंत्र स्वर मानने लगे हैं जो अँगरेजी के मेट और मैट वाले ही हैं। यही बात ओ और औ के बारे में है. मराठी और हिंदी में इन अँगरेजी स्वरों के लिए नए चिह्न तो बना लिए गए हैं, लेकिन कोश में उन का क्रम क्या होगा--यह कहीं तय नहीं है.<br /><br />मैं इस समस्या को लेखन और कोश की समस्या के तौर पर मिला कर देखता हूँ। नए स्वरों को लिखना और टाइप करना तो एक नई समस्या है ही (हम पाट्य़ कर्म में इन के बारे में नहीं सिखाते. पाठ्य क्रम में हम क़ ख़ आदि के बारे में, ड़ और ढ़ के बारे में नहीं बताते. वहाँ तो हम बारह खड़ी सिखाते हैं अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ अं अः. लेकिन कोशक्रम में होता है अं अः अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ... इसी तरह क्ष त्र ज्ञ सब से अंत में बताए जाते हैं. बच्चे समझते हैं कि ये तीन अक्षर ह के भी बाद में आते होंगे. जब बच्चा कोश देखता है तो समझ नहीं पाता कि मैं कौन सा शब्द कहाँ खोजूँ। अब हम अइ अई अउ अऊ लिख सकते हैं, लिखते हैं. सुअवसर शब्द संस्कृत में हो ही नहीं सकता. वहाँ होता स्ववसर. ये सब देखते हुए, यह बात स्वीकार करते हुए कि सारे संसार तो क्या, सारे भारत की सभी ध्वनियाँ हमारी देवनागरी में नहीं समोई जा सकतीं, हमें प्रचलित स्वरों के ज़रिए निकटतम राह अपनानी चाहिए. आप स्वयं देखिए--आज हिंदी में क्या हो रहा है? मेट मैट टेस्ट टैस्ट मेच मैच आदि के हिज्जे एक से ही लिखे जा रहे हैं. देखिए-- टेस्ट मेच देखने का असली टेस्ट तो मैदान में ही लगन <span style=""> </span>सन 1973 में अरविंद कुमार को ऐसी लगी कि टाइम्स आफ़ इंडिया (मुंबई) से प्रकाशित होने वाली उच्चस्तरीय औऱ लकप्रिय फ़िल्म पत्रिका </span><i><span style="" lang="HI">माधुरी</span></i><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI"> का संपादक पद त्याग कर 1978 मं दिल्ली चले आए और पहले कार्डों पर डाटा बनाना शुरू किया। इस में आरंभ से ही पत्नी कुसुम पूरी तरह उन के साथ थीं और सहयोगिनी बनी।</span><span style=""><o:p></o:p></span> <p class="UninormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI"> उन के पास भारत के लिए आधुनिक थिसारस बनाने के लिए कोई उपयुक्त माडल नहीं था। रोजट का थिसारस देश की संस्कृति को लक्षित करने के लिए बेहद अनुपयुक्त पाया गया। और उस के नए औऱ सुविशाल अंतरराष्ट्रीय संस्करण भी एशियाई संस्कृतियों से नाख़बर थे। पुराने अमर कोश का माडल आज के ज़माने में काम नहीं करता था। सब से पहले तो उस में जो ज्ञान संकलित था वह 1,500 साल पुराना था। दूसरे उस के सामाजिक संदर्भ दूसरे थे। वर्गों का विभाजन वरण व्यवस्था के अनुरूप किया गया था। स्वर्ग प्रकरण में देवी देवताओं की सूची नाकाफ़ी थी। संगीत अगर नैसर्गिक काररवाई था, तो संगीतकारों कलाकारों की गिनती शूद्रों मे थी। गायों को पशुओं में नहीं रखा था, बल्कि वैश्य वर्ग में थीं। ब्राह्मण वर्ग में न हो कर पुरोहित क्षत्रिय वर्ग में थे क्यों कि वे राजाओं के पुरोहित होते थे।</span><span style=""><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="UninormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI"> अतः दंपति को अपना बिल्कुल अलग और नया माडल अपनेआप बनाना था। यह कोई आसान नहीं था। उन्हों ने शब्दों के संकलन का काम नहीं रोका। कार्डों को वे अलग अलग ट्रेओं में रखते गए। हर ट्रे के विषय और उपविषय अलग रखे गए। ट्रेओँ का क्रम बदलने मात्र से माडल हर सप्ताह बदल जाता था। पहला मनपसंद माडल बनने में 14 साल लगे। तब तक पूरे कमरे में कई मेज़ों और रैकों में लगीं बीसियों ट्रेओं में 60,000 से ऊपर कार्डों में 2,50.000 से ऊपर शब्द और अभिव्यक्तियाँ लिखी जा चुकी थी। काम इतना बढ़ गया थी कि याद रखना मुश्किल हो गया था कि किन विषयों पर कार्ड समूह पहले ही बन चुके हैं।</span><span style=""><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="UninormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI"> अब तक उन का बेटा सुमीत ऐमबीबीऐस और ऐमडी (सर्जरी) कर चुका था और दिल्ली के राममनोगदर लोहिया अस्पताल में रैज़िडेंट सर्जन था। वहाँ कंप्यूटरन की प्रक्रिया चल रही थी। सुमीत को लगा कि सप्ताह के सातों दिन पूरा टाइम लगे रहने पर भी हमारा काम कंप्यूटर के बग़ैर कई दशकों में भी पूरा नही हो पाएगा। उस का कहना था कि कंप्यूटर पर डाटाबेस बनाना ही होगा। इतने संसाधन नहीं थे कि कंप्यूटर और महँगे प्रोग्राम ख़रीद सकें या प्रोग्रामर रख सकें। इस का इलाज़ सुमीत ने ही निकाला। वह ईरान की सरकारी तेल कंपनी में सर्जन का काम करने गया औऱ कामचलाऊ बचत होते ही लौट आया। पहला काम किया कंप्यूटर ख़रीदने का, दूसरा किया बग़ैर कोई संस्थान जाइन किए प्रोग्रामिंग सीखने का। शीघ्र ही उस ने फ़ौक्सप्रो </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-variant: small-caps;">FoxPro</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI">पर काम करने के लिए थिसारस लायक़ प्रोग्राम लिखा, धीरे धीरे आवश्यकतानुसार उस का विकास करता गया। यहाँ तक कि वह प्रोग्रामिंग में विशेषज्ञ बन गया, और बाद में तो सिंगापुरी की एक कंपनी में सीनियर वाइस प्रैज़िडेंट बन कर अस्पतालों को चलाने का जो प्रोग्राम बनाया वह दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया के कई अस्पतालों में सफलतापूर्वक चल रहा है। <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="UninormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;" lang="HI"> अरविंद दंपति ने पहले 5,00,000 रिकार्डों का हिंदी डाटा lang="HI">का प्रकाशन दिसंबर 1996 में नेशनल बुक ट्रस्ट इंडिया ने स्वाधीनता की आगामी स्वर्ण जयंती के लिए विशेष उपहोर के तौर पर किया। पहली प्रति तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति डा शंकरदयाल शर्मा ने राष्ट्रपति भवन में विशेष समारोह में स्वीकार की। लोगों ने इसे हाथो हाथ लिया। हर तरफ़ इस का स्वागत हुआ प्रशंसा मिली। इसे हिंदी के माथे पर सुनहरी बिंदी, सदी की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुस्तक, जैसे विशेषणों से अलंकृत किया गया। Its compiler, Kashyap, was bestowed with the lofty title of <i>Prajapati</i><span style="">,<i> </i></span>the progenitor. <i><span style="color: red;">Nirukt, </span></i><span style="color: red;">the s</span><span style="color: red;">age Yask's treatise on <i>Nighantu, </i>may have been the world's first dictionary-encyclopaedia</span>; it gives words and their meanings which are elaborated upon in great detail. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">There were several subsequent compilations of Sanskrit dictionaries. The <i>Shabdakalpadrum, </i>a Sanskrit dictionary of an unknown date, lists twenty-nine such works, most of which were arranged subject-wise and were, in a broad sense, thesauruses.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><i><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">Amar Kosh </span></i><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">is the bible of all the Sanskrit thesauruses.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> Its author, <st3:givenname st="on">Amar</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">Singh</st3:Sn> (<st3:givenname st="on">Amar</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">Simha</st3:Sn> in <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on">Roman</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">Devanagari</st3:Sn></st1:PersonName>) gave his work the title of <i>Namalinganushasan </i><span style="">(</span>the Discipline of Names and Genders). It was also called <i>Trikaand, </i>because<i> </i>it was divided<i> </i>in three hierarchical cantos with twenty-five chapters having a total of 8,000 words in 1,502 <i>shlokas</i> or verses. It is popularly known as <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on"><i>Amar</i></st3:GivenName><i> <st3:sn st="on">Kosh</st3:Sn></i></st1:PersonName> to acknowledge the achievement of its author, just as the English thesaurus, in all its editions and variations, is better known as <i>Roget's Thesaurus</i>.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">When the <i>Amar Kosh</i> first made its appearance is not known, but it may have been written between the fourth and the tenth centuries </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-variant: small-caps;" lang="EN-GB">ad</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-variant: small-caps;" lang="EN-GB">. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Ancient Indians rarely kept records of dates! Like the later <i style="">Roget's Thesaurus</i>, <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on"><i>Amar</i></st3:GivenName><i> <st3:sn st="on">Kosh</st3:Sn></i></st1:PersonName> was an instant success. Its fame spread beyond the <st1:place st="on">Himalayas</st1:place> and it became the subject of numerous treatises. It is said that one Pandit Gunaraj translated it into Chinese in the sixth century. The Hindi–Persian poet, <span style="color: red;">Ameer Khusro's <i>Khalikbari</i></span> (twelfth–thirteenth century </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-variant: small-caps;" lang="EN-GB">ad</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">) was directly inspired by it. His Persian–Hindi thesaurus-cum-dictionary can be counted among the early bilingual thesauruses of the world.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">M</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">ost Sanskrit and Indo–Pers</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">ian</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> dictionaries till the nineteenth century were arranged in a rhyming order. In non-script and pre-printing societies, versification was the accepted way of writing important books on the premise that it is easier to remember a verse than a prose paragraph. This also explains the proliferation of synonyms in these languages; it helps to have parallel words at hand, to balance a metric </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">line</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The advent </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">of modern lexicography goes back to early-seventeenth-century <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">England</st1:country-region></st1:place>. The first English dictionary is believed to be </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cawdrey" target="_new"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Robert Cawdrey</span></a></span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">'s <i><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_Alphabeticall" target="_new">Table Alphabeticall</a></i> of </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1604" target="_new"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">1604</span></a></span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">. It included 3,000 words and contained little more than synonyms. The first comprehensive dictionary was </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Blount_%28Lexicographer%29" target="_new"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Thomas Blount</span></a></span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">'s <i>Glossographia</i> in </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1656" target="_new"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">1656</span></a></span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">. <span style="color: red;">But the first true modern English dictionary was Samuel Johnson’s <i>Dictionary of the English Language </i>(1755).</span></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial; color: red;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">In 1806, Webster published <i>A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language,</i> the first American dictionary.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> Immediately thereafter, he went to work on his magnum opus, <i>An American Dictionary of the English Language,</i> for which he learned twenty-six languages, including Anglo-Saxon and Sanskrit, in order to research the origins of his mother tongue. This book, published in 1828 with 70,000 entries, set a new standard in lexicography. Many felt that it surpassed <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on">Samuel</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">Johnson</st3:Sn></st1:PersonName>'s 1755 British masterpiece, not only in scope but in authority as well. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The largest dictionary of the world is <i>het <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on">Woordenboek</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">der Nederlandsche</st3:Sn></st1:PersonName> <st1:place st="on">Taal</st1:place> (WNT)</i> (the Dictionary of the </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language" target="_new"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Dutch language</span></a></span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">). It took 134 years to create (1864–1998) and has approximately 4,30,000 entries on 45,805 pages in 92,000 columns.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">A big landmark in modern lexicography was the publishing of <span style="color: red;">Dr Peter Mark Roget's thesaurus in 1852.</span> This edition had 1,500 words arranged in a systematic, subject-wise manner. <st3:sn st="on">Roget</st3:Sn>'s work gave the writer his first tool to select the right word for a concept. Since then, its newer editions have had many words added to it, culminating in the vast international editions of today.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Contact with the West and the establishment of British rule in the eighteenth–nineteenth centuries gave a new impetus to language studies in <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place>. The rulers needed to understand their subjects better and better and the discipline of Indology came into being. Simultaneously, great efforts were afoot to propagate Christianity. To make vernacular translations of the Bible, Christian missionaries took to learning Indian languages and made grammars to fulfil their needs. Scholars made bilingual dictionaries; among them is the famous and </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">still </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">unrivalled <i>Sanskrit–English Dictionary</i> (1872) by Sir Monier Monier-Williams.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial; color: red;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Even before <st1:city st="on">Independence</st1:City>, many </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">individuals </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">and organizations </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">in <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">were making Hindi, English–Hindi and Hindi–English dictionaries. The vast Hindi <span style="color: red;">dictionaries of Nagari Pracharini Sabha (<st1:city st="on">Varanasi</st1:City>) and Hindi Sahitya Sammelan (<st1:city st="on">Allahabad</st1:City>) are examples of the remarkable collective work </span></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">and</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB"> modern <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place>'s attempts in lexicography.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">India</span></st1:country-region></st1:place><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">’s i</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">ndependence</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> from British rule </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">in 1947 greatly accelerated the process; the nascent nation had to come to terms with a new world. This gave a new urgency to dictionary making. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Under</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> the British</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> rule</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">, many </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Indians </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">opposed </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">the usage of </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">English </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">which they viewed </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">as an imperial imposition on the country. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">After <st1:city st="on">Independence</st1:City>, however, English was increasingly </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">perceived as </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">an important portal</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">of <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">to the world. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">This explains the emphasis on</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">the creation of </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">English–Hindi and Hindi–English dictionaries</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">. S</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">ome bilingual dictionaries between Hindi and languages like Russian and German were </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">also </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">made</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">. The </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Government of India set up commissions to coin technical terms so that Hindi could replace English as the medium of education, governance and technological development.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefaceheadsub" style="margin: 14pt 2pc 8pt; line-height: normal;"><strong><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: blue; font-weight: normal;" lang="EN-GB">We decide to make a thesaurus<o:p></o:p></span></strong></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">Arvind</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">first </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">came to know </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">of </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">and use <st3:sn st="on">Roget</st3:Sn>'s work</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">in 1952</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> and </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">wished Hindi had such a wonderful tool. He hoped that in the new spirit of dictionary making in <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place>, a Hindi thesaurus would soon be made too. Two decades later, Arvind was in <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Bombay</st1:City></st1:place> (now Mumbai), editing a Hindi fortnightly magazine, <i>Madhuri</i><span style="">,</span> for the <i>Times of India</i> group. There was still no Hindi thesaurus on the horizon. <span style="color: red;">On the evening of Christmas Day 1973, it occurred to him that he would have to make it.</span> The next morning, we discussed the idea during our walk and decided to go ahead </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">with the work</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We were well aware that the colossal job would require our full-time dedication. Arvind would have to leave his lucrative job and, in the absence of any financial support, we would have to live </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">simply off </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">our savings. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We spent some months in collecting reference material. <span style="color: red;">On 19 April 1976, we started work on a part-time basis, in our off hours.</span> Arvind would write words on specially designed cards and Kusum would later create indexes for them on a set of smaller cards. <span style="color: red;">In 1978, Arvind left <st1:city st="on">Bombay</st1:City> and we moved to <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Delhi</st1:City></st1:place>. The final plunge into the <st1:place st="on"><st1:placetype st="on">ocean</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:placename st="on">Hindi</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> vocabulary had been taken.</span></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">Arvind had imagined that we would be able to complete the work in two years (it eventually took twenty!).</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> He had reasoned that we could follow the pattern of <i>Roget’s Thesaurus</i>. We assigned numbers to all the concepts and put the numbered cards in the Rogetian sequence. All that remained to be done was to fill the cards with appropriate Hindi words. Alas, it was not that simple.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">To check the model, Arvind went through the first few pages of a Hindi dictionary. A large number of necessary concepts were missing in <st3:sn st="on">Roget</st3:Sn>'s</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> and t</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">here was no way to add more </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">categories </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">between the already assigned </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">sequential </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">numbers.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><st3:sn st="on"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Roget</span></st3:Sn><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">'s work is based on the so-called scientific classification. Language, however, is anything but scientific. While the study of words is a science, people coin words in various unscientific ways,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">mostly associative, but sometimes just whimsical. Associations vary from people to people and time to time and have societal contexts. The scientific system is also handicapped by difficulties that the layman may have in making a straight association of concepts. For example, in modern Rogetian editions, <i>wheat</i> is listed with <i>grasses</i>. Among its associations are <i>bamboo, banana</i>. No relationship has been pointed out with <i>cereal</i> or <i>food</i>. Another example is that of <i>steel</i>. The user thinks of <i>steel</i> in the context of <i>iron</i>. But in <st3:sn st="on">Roget</st3:Sn>, it is counted among <i>alloys</i> with no reference to <i>iron</i>. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">When <span style="color: red;">Roget</span></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">’s system </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">failed us,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> we considered emulating <span style="color: red;">Amar Singh.</span> However, he <span style="color: red;">was out of sync with new realities.</span> <i>Wars</i> or <i>arms</i> no longer conjure up images of warriors from the k<span style="">shatriya </span>caste. Nor would one associate <i>lion</i> with a <i>kshatriya</i> or <i>cow</i> with a <i>vaishya</i>. The <i>shudras</i> are no longer menials or servants. In <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on">Amar</st3:GivenName> <st3:sn st="on">Singh</st3:Sn></st1:PersonName>’s time, <i>music</i> was a heavenly activity, but a <i>musician</i> a menial. Thus, he put <i>music</i> in the first canto <i>Heavens</i>, and <i>musician</i> under <i>Shudras </i>in the second; this would not work in the contemporary context.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">It was now plain to us that we had no model; that w</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">e were</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB"> on our own.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> There were no</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> pointers to </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">what order, sequence, pattern or structure we would give to our word groups. We decided to evolve our own system as we progressed. There were at least five false starts. It was fourteen years before we came upon a viable </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">structure.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The job of adding words was divided between the two of us. <span style="color: red;">Arvind</span> took care of categories like <i>activities, ideas, abstract nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, idioms</i> and <i>exclamations.</i> <span style="color: red;">Kusum</span> was assigned words relating to <i>things</i>, <i>animals, trees, herbs</i> and <i>mythological names.</i> She had to face unforeseen difficulties. Hindi has many words for a tree/animal and a word may stand for many trees/animals. Her problem was how to find a way to distinguish and insert a word in the right place. Fortunately for her, <st1:personname st="on"><st3:title st="on">Sir</st3:title> <st3:sn st="on">Monier-Williams</st3:Sn></st1:PersonName>' excellent Sanskrit–English dictionary gives the New Latin technical names of such things. Kusum started making an index of New Latin technical terms, to check and re-check if her entries were right.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefaceheadsub" style="margin: 14pt 2pc 8pt; line-height: normal;"><strong><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: blue; font-weight: normal;" lang="EN-GB">Computer and the Shabda Lexicographer</span></strong><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: blue; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">By 1990-91, we had </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">a roomful of </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">60,000 hand-written cards with over 2,50,000 words.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> The cards were arranged subject-wise in specially designed wooden trays in which we were able to stack</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">two</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> or </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">three rows of about 150 cards. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">tray</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">s and rows</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">were </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">arranged </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">in </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">conceptual groups and subgroups. To change the sequence, we would inter-shift trays, or subgroups within a tray. The task of handling the data spread all over was getting out of hand. There was </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">also </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">much overlapping of categories and repetition of words.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We also had to think of the means to resolve the logistics of handling the data while</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> publishing. The numerous cards would first have to go to typists who, we feared, would mix up their sequence or lose some cards. There could be typographical errors, or corrected type sheets could get mixed up. Typesetters at the printing press would add their own quota of errors. Even with careful proof-reading, it seemed unlikely that we would have an error-free work. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The formidable task of creating indexes also stared us in the face; once the thesaurus part of the book was typeset, a veritable army would be required to index it and, worse, indexers might supply their own share of unforgivable blunders. Without an index, a thematic thesaurus would have no meaning. We initially turned down the idea, then submitted. He was back in <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Delhi</st1:City></st1:place> in 1992. He </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">had determined that our work required a database programme, not just a word processor</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">The importance of a database for a thesaurus or dictionary cannot be overstated. It facilitates the handling and management of data in various ways. One can add as many new categories or concepts as one likes, include extra columns, rows and fields, enter any number of synonyms, and shift groups to change/modify the sequence. Once a data is in place, duplications show up and can be removed; records or expressions can be examined, edited, changed.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> And, more importantly, indexing is automatic.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">To be of any use, databases need complex programming. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We soon learned that there were no programmes available for making thesauruses. We would need to get our own software package developed and customized. But c</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">omputer program</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">mers </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">do not come cheap. Further, we discovered, no one from the several software companies we approached</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> had any previous experience to meet our specific requirements. The task of developing a custom-built solution would take time and cost an astronomical amount</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><st1:personname st="on"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Sumeet</span></st1:PersonName><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">found he had a natural and hitherto undiscovered talent for </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">programming</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> and took on the daunting task.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">He selected <span style="text-transform: uppercase;">FoxPro</span> 2.0 as the most appropriate platform for our database. Over the next six months, he </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">wrote the initial application for </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">converting our manually written cards. H</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">e kept upgrading the programme, adding new modules to satisfy our ever-increasing demands, enabling us to view and examine the growing data, edit it, and reorganize it. His programme allowed us to earmark individual records for selection to feature in various types of mono-, bi- and multilingual thesauruses and dictionaries. He has now evolved a foolproof, almost automatic system of converting DOS data into fully formatted </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Adobe PageMaker and Microsoft Word documents with </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">multilingual indexes,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> ready for taking camera-ready printouts.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Our labour of love first bore fruit after </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">twenty years in the shape of <i><span style="color: red;">Samantar Kosh Hindi Thesaurus</span></i></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">—the first ever in Hindi.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">It </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">contains 1,60,850 expressions grouped in 1,100 categories and 23,759 sub-categories. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">National Book Trust, <st1:country-region st="on">India</st1:country-region>, published it in 1996 as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Independence</st1:City></st1:place>.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> We were </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">thrilled </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">to present its first copy on 13 December 1996 to the then President of India</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We often wonder what would have happened if we had not taken the computer route. However, as linguists know, it is uncommon to find two words in two languages which have the same meanings, weights, backgrounds and associations.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> To give a simple example, the English word <i>success</i> has two Hindi equivalent words, <i>saphalata</i> and <i>kamyabi.</i> All three words have different cultural and semantic backgrounds and contexts. The word <i>success</i> represents a sense of reaching somewhere. <i>Saphalata</i> is a word emanating from an agricultural background; it literally means <i>fruitfulness </i>or<i> having come to fruition</i>. <i>Kamyabi</i> has an Indo-Persian origin and denotes the achievement of an objective. Its Sanskrit-based equivalent can be <i>kritkaryata</i> (success in one's endeavour), a term now used for thankfulness. <i>Success</i> leads to <i>succession</i>, but neither <i>saphalata</i> nor <i>kamyabi</i> can lead one to <i>uttaradhikar</i>.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">One is also at a loss to find the English equivalent for the commonly used Hindi word, <i>shobha</i>. Hindi–English and Sanskrit–English dictionaries offer a number of English words as its rough equivalents: <i>splendour, brilliance, lustre, beauty, grace, loveliness, elegance, show</i>… None of these is satisfactory. S<i>hobha </i><span style="">embodies</span> only a fraction of these put together and a lot more.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt; color: red;" lang="EN-GB">A bilingual English–Hindi/Hindi–English thesaurus was the obvious way around this predicament.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> For a concept in either language, it would offer a host of options to choose from,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> far exceeding the potential of a simple </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">dictionary. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">India</span></st1:country-region></st1:place><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> has a very high density of English-knowing and -speaking people; many Indians have been educated through the English medium and are more comfortable using English than Hindi. There are also many first- and second-generation non-resident Indians, especially in the <st1:country-region st="on">USA</st1:country-region> and <st1:place st="on"><st1:country-region st="on">UK</st1:country-region></st1:place>, non-Indian researchers and scholars of Hindi,</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> others </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">who wish to enrich their Hindi and English vocabularies or some who simply wish to look up a correct Hindi word for an English one.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">There are also several people translating into and from Hindi and need parallel Hindi/English words. </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">In addition, there are </span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">non-English non-Indians who learn English to learn Hindi, as a bridge between their mother tongue and Hindi. South Asians who share cultural traits with us can also be included in the list of people for whom such a work would be useful.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> Also, for the many non-Indians who would like to understand South Asian terms in the context of their own sensibilities, such a work would be needed.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">With these factors in mind, <span style="color: red;">we started work on an English–Hindi word bank in 1997.</span></span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">We took the Hindi data as the base. Now, the first step was to add, in the <span style="text-transform: uppercase;">FoxPro</span> table, columns to accommodate corresponding English headings, subheadings and synonyms. The next was to find equivalent English words for them in the <st1:personname st="on"><st3:givenname st="on"><i>Samantar</i></st3:GivenName><i> <st3:sn st="on">Kosh</st3:Sn></i></st1:PersonName>. To help us, our daughter <st1:personname st="on"><span style="color: red;">Meeta</span></st1:PersonName><span style="color: red;"> Lall,</span> gold-medallist </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;" lang="EN-GB">MSc</span><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB"> in <span style="">Nutrition</span> from <st1:city st="on">Delhi</st1:City>'s <st1:place st="on"><st1:placename st="on">Lady</st1:PlaceName> <st1:placename st="on">Irwin</st1:PlaceName> <st1:placetype st="on">College</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, <span style="color: red;">willingly took up jotting down the English equivalents in a copy of the <i>Samantar Kosh. </i>(She later edited our data on food, nutrition, and health.) </span><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">From here on, it was Arvind's task to find and add more English words for all the subheads. Kusum would sometimes be pressed in to look up Hindi–English, English–Hindi, and standalone English dictionaries to check and cross-check meanings. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Once the Hindi to English part was done, we knew a large number of non-Hindi concepts must have been left out since our data was basically Hindi and Indian. To ensure a true bilingual character with cross-cultural references, we now engaged in entering words from the English vocabulary, going from A to Z. Unique English expressions had to be inserted and linked to Indian culture at appropriate places and Hindi equivalents added for them. This process of cross-fertilization has helped us change, enrich and improve the Hindi data too. Many new categories have been added, and many more expressions included.</span><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="prefacenormal" style="margin: 0pc 2pc 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;" lang="EN-GB">Now we may rightfully claim to have a rich cross-cultural bilingual data of English and Hindi expressions, linking Indian and principal world cultures.
